Macau
(Macao), is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the Republic of China, the other is
Hong
Kong. Macau is situated on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, about 64 kilometers to the east, and Macau is also bordered by Guangdong Province to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south.
The population of around 624,000 is living in an area of 31.3 km2 (12.1 sq mi), makes Macau the most densely populated region in the world, and
Macau is one of the world's richest cities.
Macau's economy is based largely on tourism. Other chief economic activities in Macau are export-geared textile and garment manufacturing, banking and other financial services.
the unit of currency is the pataca, which is currently pegged to the Hong Kong dollar at a rate of HK$1 = MOP1.03. The name pataca is a Portuguese.
Macau is a former Portuguese Overseas colony in South
China, near to Hong Kong. It retains much of the culture from the
Portuguese time. The old buildings in the centre of the city are a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. Macau today is famous for it's gambling and
casinos. More money changes hands in the casinos here than in Las Vegas.
The mixing of the Chinese and Portuguese cultures and traditions for more than four centuries has left Macau with an inimitable collection of holidays, festivals and events. The biggest event of the year is the Macau Grand Prix in November
In the southern part of the Peninsular, the New Reclaimed Area and the Outer Harbor Area, compared with the more traditional central and western areas, is the newly-developed region on which the modern aspect of the city can be found. Macau and China have a full international border. Chinese visas do not grant access to Macau nor vice versa and Chinese citizens need a visa to visit Macau. Most European citizens, as well as Australians, Americans and Canadians do not require a visa for visiting Macau.
